Introducing The 1891: A New Frequency for Your Work WeekIt’s time to tune out the static
We are thrilled to announce that The Sorg Opera House is officially expanding its offerings into a dedicated weeknight listening lounge experience. We’re building out a "third space" event series designed for one thing: the art of the deep listen.
Rooted in the Jazz Kissa culture of Tokyo and modeled after iconic high-fidelity bars of New York, Los Angeles, Paris, & Berlin. This is not your typical nightlife experience, and we don’t want it to be. We’ll save the party for the weekend.
Every first and third Tuesday of the month: 6-9pm
Escape the daily noise and immerse yourself in the sounds of the Sorg Opera House. Unwind and find that elusive mid-week clarity.A Space to Arrive-
Doors open at 6pm. Check in at the front box office with a small cover and present your ID or Annual Pass
Stop by the bar, order any refreshments, and stake out a spot throughout the lobby area or theater. Be mindful of any posted access restrictions. If you are unsure, seek out a theater volunteer.
The first full curated album drops at 6:30. We encourage you at that point to unplug from the outside world: leave the rush, noise, and algorithms behind.

Designed with intention, each session is a study in atmosphere and detail.
Expect meticulously curated album selections presented within an elevated listening environment. Sound is not background, but the focal point. As the series evolves, so will the experience, expanding into bespoke evenings and thoughtfully curated community programs.
This is a space for those who value depth over distraction.

A listening lounge (or listening bar) is a specialized, intimate venue centered on high-fidelity (Hi-Fi) audio, where patrons listen to music—often vinyl—played on premium equipment in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Inspired by Japanese "jazz kissa" cafes, they offer a curated sonic experience, featuring curated drinks and low-volume, focused conversation, acting as an analog sanctuary from noisy bars.
Our reimagined format utilizes the superb acoustics of the historic Sorg Opera House. With minimal amplification, listeners will experience an enveloping aesthetic and collective experience no matter where they are in the theater.
-
Keep conversations quiet: Talk, if at all, at a low volume so as not to distract from the music.
Minimal distractions: Avoid using phones, refrain from taking flash photos, and limit your screen time.
No tobacco or cannabis products: As much as some of us wish to light up and chill, Please observe all laws and regulations regarding smoking indoors.
Keep parties small: Listening bars are designed for intimate, quiet appreciation, not loud group outings.
Do not touch equipment: Never touch the sound equipment. No touch!
Stay in designated areas: You are welcome to explore accessible areas of the theater where seating is available. However, for your safety, do not access blocked off areas.
Respect the music: Do not ask the DJ or bartender for requests during the event; the music is curated for a specific atmosphere. Like our concerts, we’ll do our best to offer a wide range of genres and promote them in advance. If you have a great album for us to consider, we have a drop box in the lobby for suggestions on future events!
Overall, respect the venue: Please return any glasses to the bar, and clean up your area for the next patrons. Listen to requests from volunteer workers to maintain a quiet atmosphere, and refrain from overindulging on alcohol. It is a Tuesday, after all.
Failure to adhere to etiquette, posted guidelines, and requests from our volunteer workers can result in removal from The 1891 Event.
-
Come as you are. We imagine most folks may come from work on a Tuesday evening, so smart casual is the standard, but as long as you wear something.
-
While we offer numerous family events throughout the year, individuals under the age of 18 are not permitted at this time to maintain an appropriate atmosphere for our patrons. IDs are checked at the door.
-
These events are designed to be an affordable third space—or a gathering area outside of the home. We ask for a $5 cover charge at the door to cover expenses.
2026 Annual passes are available for $50. Get a cool little card, save some money in the long run as a regular, and help improve future 1891 events. (Members of the 1891 Guild Campaign receive a free 2026 annual pass. Please email president@sorgoperahouse.org)
-
No, the $50 annual pass can only be utilized for 1891 events and experiences each first and third Tuesday of the month.
-
No, the cover charge is fine!
However, we have several alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available for purchase and your enjoyment.
All proceeds from food and beverage sales go towards the restoration of the Sorg.
-
We ask that you refrain from bringing outside food into the theater at this time. Depending on the event, we may bring in food truck vendors.
-
In addition to the Listening lounge experience, we are working to program guest speakers and lecturers, documentaries, art house and independent cinema showings, and other curated, bespoke events. Your continued support and attendance will enhance the experience!
-
Absolutely! To view our upcoming shows, visit the “Tickets and Events” section of our website. Find a volunteer in the lobby during 1891 events and you can purchase tickets in person at the box office.
